Open Post: Obligatory Furry Media

Welcome to the first Open Post, where comments here, on FurAffinity, on Twitter, and Google+ help to shape the content of the post.  For this first one, let’s collect all the obligatory “furry” media – all that stuff you’re supposed to have seen or read in order to be a good man-animal.  Lets restrict entries to things that are furry without necessarily being made by furries.  To add something, either comment here or reply to us on FAtwitter, or Google+ with your addition.  If something belongs in two categories, I’ll likely  just add it to one, unless it’s an adaptation or has a different name.  Go!

About Makyo

Makyo spends her time as a frumpy arctic fox, usually, but she’s all over the map. She’s been around furry since about 2000 under a variety of names. She writes, programs, and screws around with music.

  1. I’m not certain the extent to which anything is obligatory, so I’ll throw some out there that I think are, or ought to be, or have been mentioned enough that they deserve some credit:

    Books:
    Ringworld — Larry Niven
    City — Clifford Simak
Little Fuzzy — H. Beam Piper
    “The Ambassadors” — Anthony Boucher
“The Ballad of Lost C’Mell” — Cordwainer Smith (also “Alpha Ralpha Boulevard,” “The Game of Rat and Dragon”)
“Space-Time for Springers” — Fritz Leiber

    Movies:
    The Lion King, naturally
I’ll put in a word for Balto, which had an attached furry community for a long time

    Television shows:
    Road Rovers
    SWAT Kats

I have deliberately left out graphic novels, although graphic novels run the gamut from outside the fandom (R. Crumb’s “Fritz the Cat”) to formative protofandom works (anything from the black and white explosion: “Usagi Yojimbo,” “Omaha the Cat Dancer,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”) to works within the fandom (“Associated Student Bodies”) because my familiarity with them is very limited.

    1. When Pocahontas came out, I was on FluffMUCK, and there was a sudden influx of raccoons. That’s why I put it there, but I’ll move it to a dubious category :o)

      1. I’m still grumpy because the Lion King and Robin Hood have to share an entry, and the various minor entities (if Over the Hedge gets in there, why not Madagascar, Madagascar 2 and The Wild? If Balto, why not All Dogs Go To Heaven and Cats Don’t Dance?)

..oh dude, you’re totally missing The Secret of NIMH.

Also, Usagi and Omaha, especially Omaha, do really have to be in there.

I’d agitate for Canardo based purely on quality but I don’t think it’s ever even been available in English. (But my local library – and in fact the nearest minor branch library, too – have all of it in Finnish translation, how weird is that?) Its slicker and less interesting cousin (not quite brother, since one is France and the other Spanish, but both are Eurocomix and would be hard to tell apart if one didn’t star a bird and the other a cat) Blacksad really caught on in the fandom at some point, though. So I’d probably throw Blacksad in there as the latest essential extramural furry comic.

        1. The point of the open post was to solicit input, not complete the list by myself, nor to make anyone grumpy :o) Thanks for the additions, I’ll toss them up there!

    1. Hmm, I’ll probably leave Nordguard off due to it being pretty explicitly furry; looking more for protofurry or things that inspired furry! Pride of Baghdad looks good, though!
